Preparation Guidelines

Radium-223 (XOFIGO™) Therapy

Patient Guidelines

Initially, the patient must schedule an interview with one of the doctors on our clinical staff.

On the day of the interview, you should take prior bone scan or bone PET-CT, laboratory tests, including a recent complete blood count and the exam request. The nuclear medicine physician will inform and guide about the procedure, in addition to clarifying any doubts pertinent to the treatment. An informed consent form will be provided at this time.

The recommended treatment regimen consists of 6 intravenous injections, which are administered 4 weeks apart from each other.

PREPARATION:

  • Fasting is not necessary.
  • Prior abundant hydration (water, juice, soft drinks) is recommended.

HOW IS THERAPY PERFORMED?

After the registration form is filled out at the reception, the patient will be sent to the bedrest room.

A peripheral vein, preferably in the forearm, will be punctured and maintained with saline.

The radioactive drug will then be injected into the vein and the saline will continue to be infused for hydration.

After hydration, the patient will be discharged.

GUIDELINES AFTER THERAPY

The patient will be followed by the referring physician and nuclear medicine physician.

Some rare cases of myelosuppression have been reported, and therefore hematological evaluation of patients should be performed at the start of treatment and before each successive dose of the drug.

Patients treated with prior chemotherapy and who show signs of compromised bone marrow reserves should be treated with caution.

The most frequently observed adverse reactions were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and thrombocytopenia. Due to the fecal excretion of Xofigo, patients with inflammatory bowel disease may present worsening of the inflammatory process, and careful evaluation is necessary in these cases.

Radioprotection guidance will be provided, in addition to the return date for the next cycle.
