Fluoroestradiol PET/CT (FES)

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:      

  • Fasting for 6 hours except water (for patients who will undergo the exam with iodinated contrast). If the exam is scheduled at the end of the morning, breakfast is allowed as long as you respect the 6-hour fast;
  • It is recommended to dress in light clothing, without metal parts;
  • Bring any previous imaging exams, recent creatinine dosage and medical request;
  • It is recommended that the test be performed with Tamoxifen suspension for 2 months, Fulvestran (Faslodex, Poemmy, Mylveston) for 6 months, other hormonal cancer therapies for 2 weeks, and chemotherapy for 3 weeks. Talk to your doctor;
  • Rule out pregnancy;
  • Patients who are breastfeeding should suspend breastfeeding for 24 hours after the exam.

 

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?    

After filling out the registration form at the reception, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and exam preparation. Then, they will be sent to the rest room, where a peripheral vein will be punctured and maintained with saline solution.

A small amount of the radioactive material (18F-fluoroestradiol) will be injected into a peripheral vein, preferably into one from the forearm. The patient should remain at rest for approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

At the end of rest, the patient will be sent to the examination room for image acquisition.

The patient should remain motionless on the device’s gurney for about 20 to 30 minutes.

If there is a need for further images, the patient will be temporarily discharges and instructed to return later for image acquisition.

Then, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions and will be able to resume their medications.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Patient collaboration is essential for good image acquisition.

The patient should remain motionless for 20 to 30 minutes.

No serious side effects have been reported in the literature with the use of this drug.
