Preparation Guidelines

Gastro-esophageal Reflux and Pulmonary Aspiration Scintigraphy

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • A 4-hour fast is required. Newborns may have their fasting reduced to 2 hours.
  • For adults, we ask you to bring 1 liter of yogurt, milk or soy milk.
  • For children, bring milk (breast, cow’s or soy) or yogurt (+/- 1 liter) and two bottles. If the child breastfeeds exclusively, bring only one bottle.
  • The use of juice or water is not recommended, as these have a faster gastric emptying time than milk and its derivatives, reducing the sensitivity of the method.
  • At our physician’s discretion, suspend medications such as: Bromopride, Prepulsid, Digesan, Plasil, Plamet, etc. two days before the exam.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After the registration form is filled out at the reception desk, the patient will be sent to the preparation room where a small amount of radioactive material (this material does not cause any reactions and exposure to radiation is minimal) will be added to a portion of milk or yogurt. This solution will be provided to the patient, who will then have to ingest the rest of the milk or yogurt.

It is important that all milk or yogurt is ingested so that the stomach is full, thus allowing for the occurrence of eventual reflux.

After ingesting milk or yogurt, the patient will be sent to the examination room and positioned on the gurney of the device. They should remain lying motionless for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. If the patient is a child, it is necessary to use adhesive strip restraints. This procedure is necessary because sedation is not recommended.

After the end of image acquisition, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.

In case of pulmonary aspiration research, the patient will be instructed to return to the clinic 2 and 4 hours after administration of the radioactive material, and at medical discretion, 24-hour imaging may also be requested. Chest images will be acquired to assess whether the ingested tracer has accumulated in the lungs. In this case, the patient will be positioned again on the gurney of the device and will remain lying down for 5 to 10 minutes.
