Preparation Guidelines

Large Intestine Transit

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • Fasting for 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Medications that alter intestinal motility should be withheld for 48 to 72 hours (laxatives or medications for diarrhea and gas).
  • Insulin-dependent diabetic patients should bring their insulin and blood glucose meter with them. Insulin should be administered just before the test begins.
  • The intestinal transit study should not be performed with blood glucose levels above 250mg/dL
  • The usual diet in the two days prior to the exam should be maintained.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief interview to check their data and exam preparation. Then, they will be sent to the procedure room, where they will ingest the radioactive material diluted in water. The patient will be temporarily discharged and should return after 1 hour, for image acquisition (lasting about 10 minutes). New images will be acquired after 6 hours, 24, 48 and 72 hours after ingestion of the radioactive material, therefore the patient must keep returning to the clinic during these three days.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.

WARNING:

Check with your doctor if the study is for small bowel or large bowel transit assessment.
