Preparation Guidelines

Intestinal Transit (Small Bowels)

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • Fasting for 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Medications that alter intestinal motility should be withheld for 48 to 72 hours (laxatives or medications for diarrhea and gas).
  • Insulin-dependent diabetic patients should bring their insulin and blood glucose meter with them. Insulin should be administered just before the test begins.
  • The intestinal transit study should not be performed with blood glucose levels above 250mg/dL
  • The usual diet in the two days prior to the exam should be maintained.
  • The patient should bring 4 slices of white bread, 2 raw eggs and 1 sachet (30g) of strawberry jam.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and exam preparation. They will then be sent to the examination room, where a small amount of radioactive material diluted in water will be administered orally, followed by a standardized meal with eggs, bread and jam.

Immediately after ingesting the meal, the patient will be positioned on the stretcher of the device to acquire images of the abdomen. This step lasts approximately 1 to 5 minutes.

At the end, the patient will be instructed to return to the exam room after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 24 hours after eating the meal to acquire new images.

During this 24-hour period, the patient should maintain their usual meals and should not use medications that alter intestinal motility.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged, being allowed to resume their daily activities without any restrictions.
