PREPARATION:
HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED ?
After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will be sent to the procedure room for radiopharmaceutical administration. If the exam is guided by ultrasound, the patient will be referred to the ultrasound/radiology clinic.
After asepsis and local anesthesia, a needle will be introduced into the patient’s belly for radiopharmaceutical administration in the abdominal cavity.
Then, the patient will be sent to the examination room at the nuclear medicine clinic for image acquisition, where they will lie on the device’s gurney for about 10 minutes.
After initial acquisition, the patient must return to the exam room 2 hours later, for further image acquisition. In this interval, the patient will be instructed to walk and lie on a gurney in the clinic, turning the body from side to side, to allow the radiopharmaceutical to disperse in the peritoneal cavity.
4- and 24-hour imaging may be required, on the discretion of the nuclear medicine physician.
If the patient is undergoing peritoneal dialysis, the dialysis solution will be infused, along with a small amount of radioactive material, on the premises of the nuclear medicine clinic.
At the end of the procedure, the patient will be discharged with a recommendation to rest for the remainder of the day.
