After Outpatient Iodine-131 Dosage (Graves/Plummer)

Patient Guidelines

CONTACT WITH OTHER INDIVIDUALS:

  • Contact with other individuals (adult or children) is allowed as long as it is not for a prolonged time.
  • For the patient to remain in a room with other people, it is necessary to increase the distance between them by at least 1 meter for 1 hour;
  • Avoid contact with pregnant women, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.

 

PRECAUTIONS AT HOME:

  • Circulation through the premises of the residence is allowed, as long as the guidelines described above are obeyed;
  • After administration of the therapeutic dose, the patient should sleep alone in the room for a period of 5 days;
  • There is no need for an exclusive bathroom and the act of urinating should be restricted to the toilet. Flushing should be long or repeated 2 to 3 times;
  • There are no restrictions on routine domestic activities;
  • In the first days after the administration of the dose, the cutlery, glasses and plates used by the customer can be disposable or, if possible, always use the same utensils and wash them separately from other utensils and crockery during this period;
  • There is no need to wash clothes separately, except in situations where urinary loss occurs in the clothes.

 

PRECAUTIONS AT WORK:

  • The same precautions above must be followed at work.

 

PREGNANCY:

  • Pregnancy should be avoided for a period of 6 months after receipt of the therapeutic dose.

 

FOOD AND MEDICATIONS:

  • We suggest not using antithyroid drugs, propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole (Tapazol) for at least 48 hours after administration of the therapeutic dose of 131iodine. The dosage of these drugs is at the discretion of the physician who accompanies you;
  • The other drugs that are used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism can be used without restrictions (e.g., Propranolol);
  • There are no dietary restrictions after 24 hours of administration of the therapeutic dose.

RETURN VISITS:

  • Schedule a return visit with your attending physician after the administration of the therapeutic dose;
  • If in doubt, contact one of our doctors.
