Preparation Guidelines

Extremities (Limbs) Lymphoscintigraphy

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION

  • Normal diet.
  • Sanitize your hands or feet well on the day of the procedure.
  • This test is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Bring in the Lower Limb/Upper Limb Doppler Ultrasound Result, as applicable

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and exam report and then will be sent to the procedure room.

Subcutaneous injections between the finger or toe spaces (as per medical request) will be administered simultaneously. Fine needles (insulin needles) will be used and the volume injected into each syringe is around 0.1mL.

After the injections, the patient will be instructed to walk for 10 minutes.

Then, they will be sent to the examination room, positioned on the stretcher of the device, and must remain lying down for approximately 15 minutes to obtain the images.

At the end of the acquisition of these images, the patient will be instructed to return to the clinic within 30 minutes and 2 hours after the injection to obtain new images.

Eventually later images will be needed.

Be aware the examination is painful and uncomfortable, as it requires subcutaneous injection of the tracer into the spaces between the fingers.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged and it is recommended that they wash the injection site well with soap and water.

Note: a) the injection of anesthetic can alter lymphatic drainage and therefore we do not use it routinely during the exam.

  1. b) even if the complaint is in only one of the limbs, the examination will always be carried out in both limbs, as the study compares both limbs.
