Gastric Emptying (Solids)

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:         

  • Fasting for 6 hours.
  • Withhold medications, such as: metoclopramide (Plasil, Plamet), tegaserod, erythromycin, domperidone, meperidine, codeine, morphine, oxycodone, dicyclomine hydrochloride, phenobarbital, hyocyamine, glycopyrolate, for 24 hours before the test.
  • Patients who use routine medications, with the exception of those mentioned above, should take them in the morning, when they get up, with a small amount of water.
  • Smokers should withhold cigarettes in the morning and throughout the exam.
  • Female patients should undergo the exam in the first 10 days of the menstrual cycle.
  • Diabetics should collect blood glucose that should be less than 200mg/dL. At the time of ingestion of the meal, insulin-dependent diabetics should use insulin in their usual dose.
  • Ask the patient to bring two raw eggs, 4 slices of white bread and 2 sachets (pots) of strawberry jam.

 

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and exam preparation, at this time he will be asked to hand over the eggs, slices of bread and jam for the preparation of the egg white omelet. A small amount of radioactive material will be added to the egg white omelette.

After the omelet is ready, the patient will be sent to the exam room and will be instructed to eat the entire meal (omelet + bread + jam).

After the end of the meal, the patient will be positioned on the device’s gurney and images will be acquired immediately, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3 to 4 hours after ingestion.

Duration of each stage of the exam: 3 to 5 minutes.

Set aside at least half a day for this procedure as the total duration of the exam is approximately 4 hours.

After final image acquisition, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.
