Gastric Emptying (Fluids)

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:         

  • Fasting for 6 hours.
  • Newborns may have fasting reduced to 02 hours
  • Withhold medications, such as: metoclopramide (Plasil, Plamet), tegaserod, erythromycin, domperidone, meperidine, codeine, morphine, oxycodone, dicyclomine hydrochloride, phenobarbital, hyocyamine, glycopyrolate, for 24 hours before the test.
  • Smokers should withhold cigarettes in the morning and throughout the exam.
  • Patients who have medications prescribed, with the exception of those mentioned above, should take them in the morning, when they get up, with a small amount of water.
  • Patients who have a nasogastric tube for feeding should check with the referring physician that one of the ends of the tube is correctly allocated inside the stomach.

 

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filing out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will be sent to the exam room.

In the exam room, the patient will be instructed to ingest a small amount of radioactive material with water.

After ingestion, the patient will be positioned on the device’s gurney and sequential images will be acquired.

Duration of the exam: approximately 40 minutes.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.
