Gallbladder Functional Study

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:         

  • Minimum fasting of 6 hours and maximum of 18 hours;
  • Study recommended only for adults (over 16 years old);
  • The patient must bring 1 can or 1 box of heavy cream and 1 liter of whole milk to make the shake;
  • This test is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

 

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and preparation. Then, they will be sent to the exam room.

In the examination room, the patient will be positioned on the device’s gurney and must remain lying down for 1 hour. A peripheral vein, preferably in the forearm, will be punctured and a small amount of radioactive material (tracer) will be injected.

Sequential images over 1 hour will be acquired immediately after injection. At the end of the dynamic images, static images of the abdomen will be taken.

Then, the patient will be given a hyper fatty meal, prepared with cream and whole milk (shake). Static images of the abdomen will be acquired 30 and 60 minutes after shake ingestion.

Further images may be obtained later, at the discretion of the nuclear medicine physician.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.
