REPARATION:
HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?
After the registration form is filled out at the reception desk, the patient will be sent to the injection room, where a small amount of the radioactive tracer will be injected into a vein, preferably into one from the forearm.
After the administration of this radioactive material, the patient will be instructed to wait approximately between 2 and 4 hours. This time is necessary for the tracer to concentrate on the bones and for the excess to be eliminated by the kidneys. We recommend that the patient hydrates themselves well (drink 2 to 3 glasses of water or juice) and that they empty their bladder several times during the waiting period. Elderly people must wait a minimum of 3 hours for the proper uptake of radioactive material in the skeleton.
It is not necessary for the patient to remain in the clinic at this stage.
Upon returning, the patient will be sent to the examination room, after completely emptying the bladder, and will be positioned on the device’s gurney. A series of full-body images will be acquired over a time interval of approximately 20 to 40 minutes.
Additional 24-hour imaging may be requested, especially when the suspicious area is in the pubic region, hands, and feet. Be aware that depending on the nuclear medicine physician’s discretion, the patient may have to return the next day to acquire late images.
Important Notes:
Some studies should be carried out with the blood flow phase. In these cases, the patient will be sent to the examination room and the injection will be made while the patient is in the device. Images will be obtained immediately after intravenous tracer injection.
