PREPARATION:
HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?
After scheduling, our technical team must order the dose of Thallium from IPEN. This drug is specific for each patient and the delivery time varies. If there is a cancellation, please notify us in advance.
On the exam day, after filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief interview to check the data and prepare.
Then, the patient will be sent to the injection room, where a peripheral vein, preferably in the forearm, will be punctured for administration of radioactive material (Thallium 201).
After injection, the patient must wait around 10 minutes to be directed to the exam room. In the exam room, the patient will be positioned and must remain lying on the device’s gurney for about 30 to 40 minutes to obtain the images. Then the patient will be released and instructed to return in 4 hours to acquire new images. It is not necessary to stay in the clinic during this waiting period. After the image acquisition is finished, the patient will be sent to the injection room and another dose of the same radioactive material will be injected into the patient’s vein. The patient will be discharged and instructed to return the next day to obtain other images.
The duration of this stage is around 40 to 60 minutes.
Note: 1) in some cases, the study may be carried out as a functional stress test (physical or pharmacological) in the first stage, depending on the exam request. Please confirm with your doctor, as if it is performed as a functional stress test, some medications and caffeinated beverages/foods should be withheld. Notify us when scheduling the exam.
2) the acquisition protocol may be modified depending on the discretion of the nuclear medicine physician.
