Preparation Guidelines

Lung Inhalation Scintigraphy

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • Fasting is not necessary.
  • This test is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Do not forget to bring any imaging tests related to the disease under investigation.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief interview to check their data and exam request. Then, they will be sent to the inhalation room.

In the inhalation room, the patient will be instructed to breathe slowly through a mouthpiece attached to an inhalation device (see figure below). The nostrils will be covered so that breathing is exclusively through the mouth. Along with oxygen and saline, a small amount of radioactive material must be inhaled.

After 5 to 10 minutes of inhalation, the patient will be sent to the examination room, where they will be positioned on the gurney of the device and should remain lying down for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Images of the chest will be acquired in several projections.

If the study is accompanied by pulmonary perfusion scintigraphy, an injection of another radioactive tracer will be administered intravenously, at the end of inhalation image acquisition.

Then, other images in the same projections will be acquired after the tracer injection.

The duration of this stage is approximately from 20 to 30 minutes.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be discharged without any restrictions.
