Preparation Guidelines

99mTc-Trodat Brain Scan

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • Fasting is not necessary;
  • Some medications should be withheld before the exam. Check the list with our attendants;
  • Always correctly inform the name of all medications you are using, and any others you have taken in the last week. No medication should be withheld without the consent of the referring physician;
  • This test is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview to check their data and then the patient will be instructed to wait 1 hour. This time is necessary for the medication to be prepared (which cannot be handled in advance due to its instability after radiolabeling).

Once the medication is ready, the patient will be sent to the injection room and a small amount of this (radioactive) material will be administered into the patient’s vein, preferably one in the forearm. Subsequently, the patient will be released and instructed to return to the clinic after 4 hours. There are no restrictions during this time. We emphasize that it is extremely important to observe the appointed return time. Delays can make the acquisition of images unfeasible, due to the instability of the radioactive material.

On the return, the patient will be sent to the examination room where he must remain lying on the gurney of the device for about 30 to 45 minutes. Patients who are unable to remain immobile during this period will not be able to perform this exam.

At the end of the acquisition, the patient will be discharged without restrictions and will be able to resume their daily medications.
