Menu for Low Iodine Diet

Patient Guidelines

The goal of this diet is to reduce as much as possible the amount of iodine that comes from food and drinks. Use non-iodized salt in food preparation, this is necessary to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

We suggest that you check the label of all products used if there is a reference to iodine or erythrosine dye in their composition or if there are any of the ingredients listed below.

 

Foodstuffs that should not be consumed for 15 days prior to therapy.

SaltAll foodstuffs containing iodized salt (snacks, fried potatoes, cookies, etc.). Custom-ordered Non-iodized salt is allowed.
Fish and food from the seaAll seafood (oysters, fish, seaweed, shrimp, etc.). Freshwater fish is allowed.
Meat and derivativesSmoked meat, sun-dried meat, meat broth, sausages (salami, bologna, mortadella, ham, bacon, sausage). All fresh meats are allowed.
Eggs, sauces, oils and seasoningsEgg yolk (egg whites are allowed), mayonnaise, soy oil and sauce, industrialized tomato sauce, ketchup, industrialized seasonings and broths (Sazon, Knorr, etc). Other seasonings, such as vinegar, olive oil, parsley, oregano, homemade tomato sauce, rosemary, thyme, corn/sunflower oil are allowed.
Fresh fruitStrawberry, cranberry, blueberries.
Leaves and vegetablesWatercress, celery, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, artichokes, unpeeled potatoes and spinach.
Grains and floursSoybeans and derivatives. Chestnuts, peanuts and salted nuts. Other grains (e.g., rice, beans, corn, wheat) and flour are allowed.
Canned goods and preservesAll canned vegetables (such as olives, pickles, sauerkraut, etc.), canned or syrupy candies and prunes.
Sweets and drinksAll chocolates, candies made with eggs and/or milk, candies and drinks containing red/pink dye. Instant or instant coffee, industrialized teas, coconut water and dark soft drinks. Natural juices and teas, clear soft drinks, light beer, and white wine are allowed. Vegan sweets, honey and molasses are also allowed.
DairyAll milk of animal origin and its derivatives (butter, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream), soy milk and tofu (soy cheese). Other milks, such as oats, almonds, rice and unsalted margarine, are allowed.
Breads and pastasIndustrialized breads, pizza and all pasta made with eggs/milk.
Food SupplementsAll food supplements (e.g. Whey protein, casein, creatine, etc.) should be suspended.

 

Menu Suggestions: choose the items of your preference below and bon appetit.

 

Breakfast options:

1) Coffee powder brewed with sugar with/without skim milk powder.

2) Vegetable milks (except soy)

3) Fresh fruit juice

4) Fruit smoothies with skim milk powder or plant milk

5) Natural teas (chamomile, green tea, fennel tea, lemon balm, etc.)

6) Homemade bread (without eggs, without milk and with non-iodized salt) at will or 1 French bread (bakery) or 4 cream crackers plus margarine without salt or olive oil, pâtés made with non-iodized salt and without egg yolk, homemade fruit jellies or honey. You can alternate with toasted French bread with olive oil, pinches of non-iodized salt and oregano.

7) Fresh fruits or unsalted nuts

8) Homemade cake (no milk and no eggs)

9) Pancakes (without milk and eggs) with honey

 

Dessert or morning snack options:

1) Fresh fruits

2) Sweet popcorn with sugar or salted popcorn with salt without iodine.

3) Homemade fruit jams (made only with fruit and sugar and/or cinnamon and cloves)

4) Vegan sweets

5) Pineapple, peach or lemon gelatin (no red dye).

 

Lunch and dinner options:

1) Rice, beans, lentils

2) Mashed potatoes (without peel), mashed cassava or cassava.

3) Boiled or fried cassava, potatoes, cassava, yams or sweet potatoes

4) Eggless noodles with homemade tomato sauce made with non-iodized salt

5) All fresh meats (chicken, beef, or pork) that can be roasted, grilled, or cooked

6) Freshwater fish (roasted, grilled, or boiled)

7) Boiled or sautéed vegetables (cauliflower, carrots, green beans, peas, broccoli, zucchini, kale)

8) Zucchini stuffed with ground beef

9) Pancake or pastry (without milk and without eggs) filled with ground beef or chicken

10) Pies (without milk and without eggs) of vegetables, meat or chicken, with non-iodized salt

11) Leafy green salads with tomatoes, grated carrots or chickpeas.

12) All natural seasonings are allowed, such as: onion, parsley, chives, celery, coriander, cumin, turmeric, black pepper, basil.

13) Vegetable soup (use eggless noodles)

14) Use sunflower or corn oil.
