Preparation Guidelines

Baseline/Sensitized Dynamic Renal Study With Captopril

Patient Guidelines

PREPARATION:

  • Suspend the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the day of the exam (e.g., diclofenac);
  • Prior hydration is recommended, so the patient will be advised to drink 2 to 3 glasses of water before starting the exam;
  • When the test aims to investigate the cause of arterial hypertension, it must be requested in two different settings: with and without (baseline) the effect of Captopril;
  • In the Baseline condition, fasting is not required and the patient must withhold some medications (consult our call center);
  • And in the setting under the effect of Captopril, in addition to withholding any related medications, the patient must come to the clinic after fasting for 4 hours, except for water, and arrive 1 hour in advance.
  • This test is not recommended for pregnant and/or breastfeeding women.

HOW IS THE EXAM PERFORMED?

After filling out the registration form at the reception desk, the patient will undergo a brief clinical interview and will be instructed to drink two to three glasses of water and empty the bladder.

Subsequently, they will be sent to the examination room, where they must remain lying on the device’s gurney for approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Once positioned, a small amount of radioactive material will be injected into a vein, preferably into one from the forearm.

Image acquisition will begin immediately after tracer injection. If this material is retained in the urinary system, intravenous administration of a diuretic will be necessary to stimulate the elimination of the retained material.

Further image acquisition after urination may eventually be requested.

When the test is performed with captopril, the patient will receive captopril orally 1 hour in advance. Blood pressure will be monitored every 15 minutes until the examination time. Then, the patient will be sent to the examination room and the study will start as described above.

At the end of the exam, the patient will be released and instructed to resume with their daily medications.

Important Notes:

Some medications can interfere with the performance of this exam, so it is important to correctly inform the name of any medications in use.
